The term "dog days" dates back to Roman times and refers to the midsummer period from July 3 to August 11.  During this time it was believed that Sirius, the Dog Star, added it's heat tot he heat of the sun.  The Romans called these weeks dies caniculares or "days of the dog."

Dogs detect moving images better than still ones.

Dogs can't focus clearly on objects closer than 20 inches (50cm), and at four inches (10cm), they can hardly see a thing.  Your face is a total blur to your doggy when he's slathering you with kisses.
