Dalmations - selective inbreeding - dachshund.Facts about Dogs 5

Did you know that...  selective inbreeding of dogs has created some problems.  For example, the dachshund's spine, now too long to comfortably support the weight of it's body, can be a source of discomfort for the dog.

In the mid-1800s, dalmations were trained to run alongside horses and carriages, protecting the passengers from other dogs who would chase the entourage.  Because of this function, they would become known as "carriage dogs."

Dalmatians were also used to keep other dogs away from racing fire engines, and became known as the mascot dogs of the fire service.
