Saluki - Afghan - DachshundFacts about Dogs 4

Close contenders to the oldest breed of dog (greyhounds) are the Saluki and Afghan, dating back about 5,000 years to ancient Sumeria.  Archeologists recognized both breeds from temple carvings.

The dachshund was domesticated about 3,000 years ago in Egypt.  But the Medieval Germans gave it it's name, which means "hunter of badgers."

The dachshund is the smallest breed of dog used for hunting.  It's short length and low body allows it to enter and maneuver through tunnels easily.
