Catnip, a leafy herb in the mint family, affects all cats from the domestic variety to lions. A chemical in catnip, neperalactone, stimulates pleasure-producing nerves in the cats brain and causes the cat to roll, rub, drool and wallow in the herb. After about 15 to 20 minutes, the effect wears off. Some cats are totally immune to catnip's effects. Kittens are not affected until they are about three months old.
In humans, catnip tea induces sleep.
