Often, cats are born with extra toes. They are called polydactyl cats and are often the result of too much inbreeding. Most "normal" cats have five toes on each front paw and four toes on each back paw.
Hemingway's Cats
The former Key West house of author Ernest Hemingway has about 60 resident cats - all descendants of Boise and Princess, the original Persians. Most of these offspring are polydactyl.
