For all their familiar appeal, dogs have a secret and mysterious side filled
with instincts and urges inherited from their distant, and not so friendly,
ancestors. Find out what that wagging tail really means.
Dogs are part of the family Canidae, which
includes wolves, coyotes and foxes. Zoologists believe they evolved about
60 million years ago.
Gray wolves (Canis lupus) are the ancestors of
all domestic dogs. They entered villages in the Northern Hemisphere in
search of food about 12,000 years ago.
